Low Hanging Fruit in the Garden

“Slip in the side door,” she whispered to her closest friends.

“… the hot pink door with the low hanging tangerines.”

The entry would be missed by most, but we didn’t because Antonella has invited us.

Tangerine Tango juxtaposes a traditional architectural structure with man made placement of fruit tree and window garden. Dark and Light values mirror woman’s inclination to know herself through dramatic contrasts!

The composition of the painting places the facade of this societal structure squarely front and center in the painting, framing it with the turquoise sky, a symbol of the Divine in all people, and the open doorway at the far left edge. Marked by the low hanging fruit, tangerine/orchid color play, the Creator within invites us to slip inside unnoticed.

Did I know all this when I selected this street scene from Sorrento to paint? Get real! How could anyone?

What I knew was that I really, really liked the dark painted wood frame of the windows on the shop and the linens hanging in the window. I was also taken with the lush tangerine, orange, and lemon trees all over Sorrento. More about them later.

For this painting I simply placed the tree that was planted there a little further in front of the shop. Then I composed the painting with the band of striking turquoise and vibrant green at the right edge ~ because it felt right!

The hot pink awning didn’t arrive in the painting until after I’d had a dream about it. In the dream, “He didn’t show up at work. Put a pink belt on with the orange.”

Yes, it was one of those non-sense dreams ~ until I wrote the thing down. At once I knew that the ‘pink belt’ meant the band of the awning across the center of my painting from the day before.

“Okay, I’m good with that.”

I painted it in and hung it on the wall.

Don’t you think she looks like she’s doing the tango? Kind of leaning way over where any conscious woman might fall if she weren’t supported by the Creator within … No! I didn’t paint the shop leaning over on purpose! She just turned out that way.

Do I fix her? NOT! I love her just as she is!

By the way, I’m taking the Creator’s advice and plucking the low hanging fruit. Slipping in the side door, instead of waiting until I have all the paintings for this book done, edited, and published …. well, here’s your chance to support this project in the making.

Sunrise Joy’s Garden, Interpreting a Dream

You know that place where you can see the sun setting and the moon rising simultaneously?

That Sweet Spot, Sunrise Joy’s Garden is being auctioned!!!

Sunrise Joy's Garden
Sunrise Joy’s Garden, oil

Absorbing the Tuscan Lifestyle and Colors into my art and life, you can see the glow of the sweet spot in this very special painting. The hilltop villa where I lived in Poggio Alla Croce, faced the Val d’Arno at sunrise and Florence at sunset. Being there ~ heart, mind, body, & spirit ~ put me in Joy’s Garden.

You know that place where you can see the sun setting and the moon rising simultaneously? I’m not sure that I did.

To see the sun setting, while simultaneously the moon is rising ~ you would have to be in a very sweet spot!

Indeed, I thought this painting was too small. I’d ignored it. Too small a thing to warrant my attention. It’s been sitting on my studio table for months. Then the other morning, with my coffee, I found myself tweaking the colors.

I liked the colors and thought I might offer it as a gift to my readers. You know, auction it. Let the highest bidder have it for whatever the one who has the last word offers. I thought it would be a great way to help people find my CreativSOUP Live Feed and Joy’s Garden Books.

As I began writing about it ~ suddenly I felt the sweet spot.

And suddenly the sweet spot, Sunrise Joy’s Garden is up for auction!!!

Nurture your Creativity ~ Dear Antonella the Rose of Sorrento

Sorrento? I’ll be there!

Dear Antonella
Antonella

Yes, I AM a bit timid about traveling alone. But honestly, I would hate to miss this chance to be with you in such a magical place!

If next year comes ~ and I missed out

Life is SO precious! My dear friend Gary passed away this month. One day we were having lunch, then a sudden stroke took him. Painting in the studio early that morning, I thanked Gary for all the wonderful conversations we had over lunch. And then I heard a voice tell me to lighten up the clouds along my horizon.

Startled, I looked again at the big painting on my easel. “Really?” I answered him back. Gary was a big man with a big presence. His radio voice could fill the room. He traveled Europe on a USO Tour singing! Quick witted, he was known as the ‘Czar of PR’ at the National Endowment for the Humanities under President Clinton.

Without hesitation, I picked up the brush and took his advice. Tweaked Light into the clouds along the horizon, searched Google Flights, and bought a ticket for Sorrento!

Suncatcher

Hesitation?

I didn’t hesitate to tweak the painting. I HAD been hesitating to buy the tickets. I am still hesitating to admit to myself that the title of the big painting, Suncatcher, is a clue to who I am.

Just the question pops another “painting” to mind.

collage

A collage I did when I was 14 won me recognition at a 5 county regional art show in my home state of New Jersey. I can still remember my mother taking me to the awards presentation in Morristown. My feet barely touched the floor as I walked to the front, my collage projected on the screen for all to see, as I received my blue ribbon.

Nurturing creativity is important. It was something I received from both my parents. And also from many others, as well.

This is why I am so compelled to throw Light and inspiration. So I guess I AM the Suncatcher.

Dear Antonella

I met Antonella  three years ago when she translated our Italian cooking lesson. She captivated us with her quick wit, warm personality, and mastery of both English and Italian. Immediately, we were friends.

When I arrived in Italy sick last fall, Antonella was knocking on my door with pharmacy, hot tea, and warm clothing. Blooming with cheer, she lifted my spirits.

She got me well in a hurry ~ in time to smell the roses, get my watercolors out, AND welcome my friends from the States.

Dear Antonella loves EVERY opportunity to speak English! She lived eight years in DC as a young woman. So delighted to meet my friends, immediately we ALL were friends.
