Eight months after being in Venice, I looked back at my photos and saw them ALL as backyard gardens. In a heartbeat, my vision for this painting clarified and I couldn’t wait to get it on canvas.

Painting in my backyard garden at home, my experience of living the Tuscan lifestyle permeated it’s way into paint. A year ago I’d wanted to let the Tuscan lifestyle seep into my life and art. But how? I was clueless.

I have been adrift wondering. Asking for directions, doubting myself, feeling lost, still wondering if I am crazy?

Ten months ago I moved my studio into an apartment in Tuscany. With my easel on the balcony overlooking my host’s gardens, vineyards, olive groves, and a view of Florence ~ I painted tiny 5×7 inch canvases.

Exuberantly sharing their backyard garden, my new Tuscan family demonstrated their famous family recipe for extracting the essence of heart from every precious moment of life. I let it in, one-brush-stroke-at-a-time. It was too overwhelming to take in all at once.

Feelings are more real than we give them credit. I am ALL of these ~ not just one. Without them, how could I paint a dream and have it be so true?

I really love this painting because it captures how I felt being in Venice for three magical days. We arrived late in the afternoon. Stepping out of the train station onto the Grand Canal, the sun was already back-lighting people walking about. Immediately I was drawn into the light and shadows of their silhouettes. I chased them up and down the streets and alleys until nightfall.

Over the Independence Day weekend, I posted this painting on my Facebook Page and asked for suggestions for it’s title. Instead you gave me a vision of myself as an artist ~ and for that I am forever grateful. Every single one of these speaks to my heart and soul. Many have shown me deeper meaning in the painting. Several show me new direction for how to allow this new way of living seep into my life and art. I will write more about this in another article ~ welcome to my barco poco!
